Making the most of poverty.

AAhhh yes. the ever joyous Filipino youth [of the slums].

I was on my way home when i saw a couple of kids swimming in a road construction site filled with muddy water. Yes, it was a pretty revolting site indeed. But come to think of it. Some thought passed through my mind which I began to ruminate for a couple of minutes. For a moment there I was chewing the cud thinking and telling myself, "Their social status seems to provide them a bit of light relief...". I tried to put myself in their shoes trying to think like the typical "have-nots" . And so I thought that if there's one thing that we could get something good out of this impoverishment, its the state of being free from any social pressure and consciousness.
Filipinos in mass are too caught up with the idea of getting on top of everybody/thing. They want to get rich, wealthy, they want to drown themselves with money (I believe crab mentality was derived from this idea). Everyone wants to be involved with glamor, the high-end life, the luxury, and the like. Social status is not a mere position anymore. More like a competition to me. Average life is not an option. Everyone is yearning for the top.
Success is such a harsh process. People kill for it.

Somehow its a pity. Everyone looks down on poverty. They disgust it. People tend not to look at the brighter side of this wretched life. No social pressure whatsoever. No need to work for vanity. A very simple life. Walang kaartehan. (Who needs a waterpark? meron namang putikan!)

Having the basic needs will suffice. But in reality satisfaction doesn't have a limit for a mere human. Sad.

"I think everyone should get rich just to make them realize that that's not the answer" - Jim Carrey
